FINCH ROAD CLOSURE - MEDIA RELEASE

Drainage & Groundwork Contractors Limited will be carrying out essential drainage repairs on Finch Road, Douglas, this summer. The work, which involves a collapsed lateral drain beneath the carriageway, is part of a wider renovation of the Removals House site and has been commissioned by Living Hope Church Limited.

To carry out the repairs safely and efficiently, a full road closure will be in place from Monday 7th July to Monday 11th August 2025. The closure has been approved in principle by the Department of Infrastructure, with detailed plans already shared with affected residents and businesses as part of our public communication strategy.

We understand that Finch Road is a key link in Douglas and often sees significant traffic during peak hours. That’s why we’ve developed a detailed traffic management plan to minimise disruption. Diversion routes will be clearly signposted, with access maintained to Chester Street Car Park and the surrounding area via alternative routes including Broadway, Derby Road, Woodbourne Road, and Bucks Road.

Pedestrian access will remain open on the Chester Street side of the road, and emergency services have been notified to ensure uninterrupted access for emergency vehicles throughout the closure.

The drainage repairs are necessary due to a historic collapse in the existing infrastructure, which could cause further surface damage and wider disruption if not addressed now. The works involve excavation, replacement, and reinstatement of a combined lateral sewer beneath the road. While we aim to complete everything within the planned five-week window, we’ve also built in contingency measures to avoid disruption during the Manx Grand Prix, which begins on 17th August 2025.

In agreement with the Department of Infrastructure, if delays occur, we will reopen and resurface Finch Road in advance of the MGP — even if some drainage works remain incomplete. Should any work be outstanding after that point, a separate short-term closure will be scheduled at a later date to allow for its completion.

This approach reflects our wider commitment to transparency and cooperation with the public. We’ve issued advance notices to affected homes and businesses, and we will continue to update residents, commuters and local stakeholders throughout the works. Our goal is always to minimise inconvenience while delivering the highest standard of work below ground — work that’s often unseen but critical to the long-term integrity of the local infrastructure.
